For June Jerome Art Walk, Yester Day’s Fine Art Gallery is featuring the contemporary artwork of Isabel “Chacha” Mathieson, who brings a lot of history to our gallery too. A native of Jerome (Chacha was born here during the tail end of the mining era), she now creates kiln-fired glass jewelry and plates, all in fantastic colors and designs. What is unique about her as an artist, though, is that she comes by her artistic gifts honestly. Her father, even though he had been a miner in Jerome, stayed on here for many years after the mines closed in the 1950’s. And he supported his family with his artwork and Plexiglas jewelry, long before Jerome became a destination for fine art. In making his art he also often enlisted the help of his enthusiastic daughter, Chacha (which name, incidentally, was short for the Spanish word “muchacha,” or “young girl”). Chacha’s present-day artwork, then, is a wonderful testimony to his artistic influence on her. An amazing legacy to her father, when Father’s Day is just around the corner, Chacha is the person to meet this month, and to hear stories from about an earlier time here, all at Yester Day’s Fine Art Gallery, located at 509 Main Street, in the lower Jerome art district.

Ben Roti joins the talented group at Gallery 527. His show Re(Act)ion continues through the end of June. Ben’s current ceramic work is made with low-fire earthenware clay and features bright, vibrant color. Using reductive techniques, through sandblasting, Ben is able to build variations and create layers, which are inspired by the results that are commonly seen in atmospheric firing. Each piece is hand-built using soft slab technique, glazed, and fired. The pieces are sandblasted on the outside for a matte finish, and then hand-sanded with wet/dry sandpaper for a soft, velvety feel, while the interior remains glossy and food-safe.
