Jerome Artists’ Cooperative Gallery
“Nature’s Own, Set in Stone” is a solo exhibition of new work by Jerome Artists’ Cooperative Gallery member, Christine Ryback. Christine notes that with daily bombardment of negative news and reports, a simple walk in the woods can be the best medicine to bring about peace of mind. Chris has always felt at home in nature; indeed, it has been her refuge where she finds spirituality. It’s no surprise, then, that her interest in casting leaves and items from nature in cement became a natural extension and form of expression for her love of nature and the outdoors. On her nature walks, Christine collects natural items which can be cast. She notices the variety in the shapes that the veins of different leaves display, giving each leaf its own personality. Christine started out casting leaves of rhubarb. Then, as her interest and talent expanded, so did the assortment of leaves that she can cast. Her collection now includes maple, cabbage, philodendron, elephant ear, summer squash, pumpkin, hosta, and even orchard and tropical leaves from Florida. In “Nature’s Own, Set in Stone, Christine presents new work including some with 3-D features. Other pieces take on a sculptural effect as they are displayed as an arrangement, such as a cast leaf tucked behind a log or piece of bark, making it part of a natural composition.“Nature’s Own, Set in Stone” runs Jan. 6 through March 1, with a reception for the artist on Jerome’s First Saturday Art walk, Jan 7 from 5-8 pm. Live music. Refreshments will be served. Jerome Artists’ Cooperative Gallery– 502 Main St. – info@jeromecoop.com www.jeromecoop.com
Ann Metlay’s studio
Visit Ann Metlay’s studio in Old Jerome High School to see an artist in action. Ann collects wood from the local desert to assemble into stand alone pieces and wall hangings During the January 7 Jerome Art Walk, she will be cleaning and constructing wall hangings using barn wood and wood chips from the mulch pile at the Verde River access near Tuzigoot. “My challenge will be to create beauty from wood which is almost entirely decomposed.” Ann explains. Ann, who recently published her book of word artistry, Sensations in Color, is also a poet. She combines her talents by attaching hangtags with one-of-a-kind poems to each of her wood assemblages.
Pura Vida Gallery

Caron Miller’s knitted scarves come in a variety of colors with matching finger-less gloves, and Debra Street’s painted silk and wool scarves add a punch of color for any winter outfit. Gallery 527
Gallery 527 continues the exhibition, “Gifts of Soul” – all new work by Julie Bernstein Engelmann, on January 7th, from 5:00-8:00 PM. Each of Engelmann’s dynamic abstract paintings embodies a meaningful experience in her life when her awareness of Soul gave her gifts of insight and joy. “For instance,” said Engelmann, “’Constellations of Support’ is a vision of human relationships as stars in the night sky, some burning brightly in our constellations while others serve as minor supports. ‘Gently Enjoying You’ is a nourishing state of attentive appreciation for a friend. ‘Lai Tsi’s Garden’ vibrates with the light of a special place I go in contemplation.” Gallery owner Donna Chesler says, “Each one has a very specific feeling, distinct from the others, which is unusual in abstract art.” Engelmann’s lush abstracts have won numerous awards. She was honored with a retrospective exhibit, Being Spirit, at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona, Pennsylvania.
“Your paintings are really engaging – a bit like a theatrical production in that they just keep on going once the curtain goes up. As an art critic, I think that’s one of the major things you bring to the party.”
– Dr. V. Scott Dimond, Curator for Visual Arts, Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art
Engelmann holds an MFA from UCLA and a BA from Barnard College, where she studied with Milton Resnick, first-generation Abstract Expressionist. Two years ago, Engelmann moved with her family from Pennsylvania to the Sedona area, where she teaches Luscious Abstractions on the faculty of the Sedona Arts Center School of the Arts. “Gifts of Soul” will be on view at Gallery 527 in Jerome through January 29.
