Yester Day’s Fine Art Galler
When taking in the dazzling artwork of Patricia Barthe, featured at Yester Day’s Fine Art Gallery at 509 Main Street in Jerome, one will realize that only the fresh eyes of a freed urbanite, upon first seeing the vivid colors of the Southwest, could synthesize desert colors into such simple yet elegant and brilliant landscapes. Impressionistic oil painter par excellence, Patricia is a native New Yorker who now chooses to live in Arizona, where she fills her canvases with an emotional energy that fairly erupts into joyful as well as healing primary colors. For those hearts who will let her miracles of light into their souls, one might say that such a sensation could only come from Mother Mary herself, to whom Patricia is devoted. Each of Patricia’s images, all in a rainbow palette, sings to us of divine sunlight, delivers us from dark times, and beckons us to a solar dance for all seasons, in ways that we may have never really experienced before.

Gallery 527
Gallery 527 announces a new exhibition, “Gifts of Soul” – all new work by Julie Bernstein Engelmann, opening Dec. 3, from 5:00-8:00 PM. Each of Engelmann’s dynamic abstract paintings embodies a meaningful experience in her life when her awareness of Soul gave her gifts of insight and joy. “For instance,” said Engelmann, “’Constellations of Support’ is a vision of human relationships as stars in the night sky, some burning brightly in our constellations while others serve as minor supports. ‘Gently Enjoying You’ is a nourishing state of attentive appreciation for a friend. ‘Lai Tsi’s Garden’ vibrates with the light of a special place I go in contemplation.” Gallery owner Donna Chesler says, “Each one has a very specific feeling, distinct from the others, which is unusual in abstract art.” Engelmann’s lush abstracts have won numerous awards. She was honored with a retrospective exhibit, Being Spirit, at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona, Pennsylvania.
“Your paintings are really engaging – a bit like a theatrical production in that they just keep on going once the curtain goes up. As an art critic, I think that’s one of the major things you bring to the party.”
– Dr. V. Scott Dimond, Curator for Visual Arts, Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art
Engelmann holds an MFA from UCLA and a BA from Barnard College, where she studied with Milton Resnick, first-generation Abstract Expressionist. Two years ago, Engelmann moved with her family from Pennsylvania to the Sedona area, where she teaches Luscious Abstractions on the faculty of the Sedona Arts Center School of the Arts. “Gifts of Soul” will be on view at Gallery 527 in Jerome from November 29 through January 29.
