Statement from the Chamber:

Home Tour 2020 (Cancelled) – Due to Coronavirus/COVID-19 Pandemic

3/14/20 – To date, there are no known cases in northern Arizona. There is a tremendous amount of planning that begins in January for our annual home tour in May of each year. Due to the unknown longevity of this pandemic (size of our event, “at risk” age group of homeowners, volunteers and guest attendees) we must cancel this year’s event for the safety of Jerome and everyone involved. We look forward to seeing you at the 2021 event.

Please email info@jeromechamber.com if you have any questions or require assistance.

The Jerome Chamber of Commerce is preparing its yearly exploration of the back streets of this historic mining town with the 54th Annual Home and Building Tour. Save the dates of May 18-19, 2019 for a look at some totally renovated gems in the mile-high town.

This year’s tour will include The Radio House, owned by Gussie and Harry Mader and built in 1919. The Maders were ham radio operators and there are artifacts from this hobby imbedded in the walls of this charming miners shack. Visitors are in for a real look back in time to life in the mining town and the simple architecture and lifestyle of Jerome. There will be a 600’ walk down a private road to get to the home so come prepared with comfortable walking shoes.

The tour will include a look at The Reber House, built in 1917. Dr Louis Reber built this home to please his bride and even measured the waist to floor length to be sure the kitchen sink would fit her exactly right. Dr. Reber was Chief Geologist for the United Verde Copper Company. He earned his PhD in geology from Yale and became the chief geologist right after graduation. He is credited with developing the concept of aerial photography for ore identification. He was in and out of Jerome and then returned from 1953 to 1964 as a general agent for Phelps Dodge. After his death in 1966, his materials were donated to the NAU geology department. Don and Kathi Feher bought this home three years ago. Don was born in Jerome over seventy years ago and lived in this neighborhood as a child. They have completed a major renovation of the entire interior space. Don, having been in the cabinet business for thirty years, restored the original wood floor, and constructed the all of the interior woodwork in old growth Douglas fir. In addition, they built up stone walls, made walkways and planted the hillside gardens.

Continuing to The Teacher’s House, this 1928 home has been continually occupied by teachers. It was selected for the HG TV Show Boomtown Builder and is beautifully updated and reworked to fit the lifestyle of the 21st century. Continuing down the hill to a garden section of town, the Gutierrez House has just had a major change and now has a second story master suite, some quirky surprises and a fabulous garden. For a modern look at Jerome, The Kinsella Home will be on tour for the second time in ten years, now reworked into the ultimate man cave but with the original spectacular million-dollar views. The tour is completed at the sub-basement of The Sullivan Hotel for a look at an amazing piece of history. We will be showing the 1915 Boiler which was state of the art at the time.

Jerome, AZ
Parking:
Shuttle bus will run from the 300 level parking lot.

This is a guided tour with transportation provided from home to home. The all-volunteer docents will explain the history and the fascinating stories behind each venue. There are plenty of steps and winding paths so the tour will not be handicapped accessible.

This year’s tour includes two homes that have been renovated in part by Tim McClellan for the new TV Show Boomtown Builders. This Jerome furniture designer and renovator has been featured on Ellen’s Design Challenge and has just updated The Baker’s House guest suite and 747 East Avenue, once Arizona’s longest running B&B and now owned by New York transplants who are putting their own touch on this charming cottage.

For the first time in many years, there are 4 homes that are close enough for guests to walk from place to place. Wear your comfortable shoes and get ready for some spectacular views from the porch of The Anderson House, an antique filled home lovingly renovated by a Glendale family and The Haven United Methodist Church. This church has been active since 1900. An outdoor sculpture by artist Bernie Molaskey has been installed and is sure to be a photo opportunity this year. ‘The Miners Cross’ is constructed of rusty nails and is a monumental piece of art.

A total of 5 homes and one public building will be on this year’s lineup. Plan to spend the entire day in Jerome. The tour will take 2 to 3 hours although you can go at your own pace and spend as much time at each venue as you wish. There will be water at each stop and refreshments at Haven United Methodist Church and Spook Hall.

After the tour, visit the unique shops of Jerome. Sample the excellent restaurants and perhaps even spend the night. Lovely accommodations fill up quickly on this popular weekend.

Save the dates of May 19-20, 2018 for a look at some never before shown gems in the mile-high town. A special treat will be the first look at Jerome legend Katie Lee’s home. The Anderson Home on Main Street, now owned by Glendale residents, has been lovingly restored to truly capture the feel of the early 20th century and is filled with antiques and artifacts from Jerome as well as family finds. The view from the deck is superb and sure to be a spot for guests to soak up the Jerome vibe. Three other properties will fill the program with interesting stories and lovingly renovated spaces.

52nd Jerome Historic Home and Building Tour – The Soule House

Share

The Soule House is on the big curve as you come into Jerome. Photo by Michael Thompson.

This year’s lineup takes visitors to the industrial looking house on the curve by The Old Jerome High School. When the current owner purchased the home in the 1980s, the old foundation was still there. The original structure was a 5-room motel with one bathroom to share. The original shower base is just off the studio deck near the entry. To build on undisturbed soil, the owner had to dig down 12 feet below the basement on the NE corner. This makes the northern wall 45 feet tall. The Sky Suite was completed in 2008 and is built of Rastra Block. The exterior finish is cement stucco done in the old-fashioned dash technique. The Flatiron Building in Jerome also has this finish. The intent of the architecture was to emulate the style of the commercial buildings in town and to be compatible with The High School. This building was a labor of love and was built almost completely by the owner. The building has over 6000 feet of floor space on 3 floors and spectacular views.

The 52nd Annual Jerome Historic Home and Building Tour takes place May 20-21, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day in Jerome, Arizona. Last ticket accepted at 3 p.m. Tour takes approximately 2-3 hours.

If you go…

When:
Saturday, May 20-21, 2017.
9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Where:
Jerome, AZ
Parking:
Shuttle bus will run from the 300 level parking lot.
Cost:
$20 Adult, $10 Kids

There will be plenty of parking out at the 300 level (past the fire station on Perkinsville Road) where a bus will pick you up to bring you to town for your tickets. The Tour starts with ticket sales at Spook Hall on Hull Avenue. Adults will pay $20 and $10 for kids. Free for children under 3. There will be lots of steps so wear comfortable shoes and prepare for an adventure.

Large vans will transport guests to the first stop at The Clubhouse, once the hospital in Jerome. Two more stops are walking distance so prepare for some steps and a walk on The Boardwalk of Jerome. Then board a van to be driven to a home in The Gulch. Back in the van, you will be driven to the North/Dundee area for a look at 3 more homes, all interesting one of a kind homes. There will be live music in Spook Hall most of the day, featuring The Jerome Ukulele Orchestra, Tommy Anderson, Hank Ervin and Tom Bauer. The Tour is not handicapped accessible.

Visit jeromechamber.com for advance tickets sales or call the chamber at 928.634.2900.
